NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 6/1/99 Light rain at all levels and mild temperatures have further consolidated the snowpack in most locations. The only exceptions to this are those areas high on NE to E aspects exposed to high potential loading from cornice collapse. The avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2) in these and similar places. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 7/1/99 Stability will again be good on slopes of most aspects. Some light snow on gentle SE winds may see some new soft slab development later on N aspects but this is not expected to amount to much. Moderate (Category 2) hazard of avalanche where new windslab build is greatest. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Wet snow at all levels on Weds. General cover remains good. ICING: Mild today (Weds) but unlikely to have a deleterious effect on overall quantity. COMMENT: Cornices still large in places. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 6/1/99 Localised areas of windslab are present at the tops of steep slopes and gullies above 1100m. Greatest accumulations on N, and NE aspects. The snowpack in these locations remains poorly to moderately bonded. Where this windslab exists in sufficient quantities the avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). Elsewhere the snowpack is generally stable. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 7/1/99 The freezing level is expected to lower overnight and rise through Thursday. The existing snowpack is not expected to stabilise significantly. Areas of poorly to moderately bonded windslab will remain in sheltered locations above 1100m. Greatest accumulations are at the top of steep slopes and gullies with a N and NE aspect. Where this windslab exists in sufficient quantities the avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). Other areas will remain generally stable. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Cover remaining at around 800m ICING: Freezing level to lower to all levels overnight, rising to 950m on Thursday evening. COMMENT: Calm conditions expected to remain on Thursday GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 6/1/99 Lower temperatures have consolidated the moist snowpack above 700m. The surface layers are firm and Icy and generally well bonded. The avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 7/1/99 Remaining cold for the first part of the day with light NE winds and the possibility of light snow showers. The snowpack will remain stable at all levels during this period. During early afternoon moderate snow showers and increasing SE winds will begin to deposit fresh accumulations of windslab onto slopes with an W to N facing aspect. On steep slopes and localised areas the avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow above 700m. ICING: Ice above 600m. COMMENT: Reasonable climbing conditions exist on buttresses above 850m. Gullies will have patches of localised shallow windslab. SOUTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 6/1/99 After an unstable period overnight the snowpack is generally well bonded except scarp slopes on N to SE aspects above 980m. Remaining cornices were also unstable. The avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 7/1/99 Light snowfall will leave some new accumulations on most aspects. Although the snowpack is generally well bonded some scarp slopes will continue to be unstable on N to SE aspects above 950m. Any remaining cornices will also be unstable. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Good cover above 900m with most in N to E corries. ICING: Buried under snow. COMMENT: Ski touring possible on higher plateau areas. CREAG MEAGAIDH AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 6/1/99 Continuing mild temperatures have helped to consolidate the snowpack. However hard slab still remains on NW through to SE aspects above 750m. In these areas the avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3); elsewhere the snowpack is generally well bonded and stable. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 7/1/99 Sub zero temperatures overnight will continue the general stabilisation of the snowpack. Moderate snowfall accompanied by rising temperatures tomorrow (Thursday) afternoon on a SE wind will accumulate fresh windslab on NW through to E aspects above 750m. Sheltered gullies and hollows will be most affected, in these areas the hazard of avalanche will be Considerable (Category 3). Large cornices are present above many steep N through to SE facing slopes. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Main cover above 700m, deepest in N to E facing coiries and gullies. ICING: Icing buried under deep snow cover. COMMENT: Costa Creag Meagaidh here today - blue skies and warm sunshine! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
