NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 12/1/99 A period of highest instability from overnight snow deposits has passed. Debris from early morning avalanche events was noted on steep NW aspects above 900m. Deeper instabilities within the snowpack still remain with "whumphing" sounds noted (and reported) on slopes of a Northerly aspect. Avalanche hazard remains High (Category 4). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 13/1/99 The period of current instability will persist. Further snow and strong variable winds will result in windslab development on many steep lee slopes above 900m. The avalanche hazard will remain High (Category 4) and where accumulations are greatest avalanches will occur. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Improving, light cover to valley with deeper drifting in high sheltered locations. ICING: Little change, cold conditions maintaining steady build up. COMMENT: Gully exit slopes with any significant build up will require careful consideration. Good but limited skiing conditions in Cairngorm ski area. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 12/1/99 A strong SW airflow has deposited significant amounts of unstable soft windslab overnight. Greatest accumulations are on sheltered steep slopes and gullies with NE, E and SE aspects above 800m. Where this slab exists, it is weakly bonded to the existing snowpack. In these locations the avalanche hazard is High (Category 4). Avalanche activity observed on E aspects at 1000m, Aonach Mor. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 13/1/99 An unstable weather pattern and continuing snowfall will not stabilise the existing snowpack. Significant amounts of unstable windslab will continue to form on sheltered steep slopes and gullies with NE, E and SE aspects above 800m. Avalanches will occur in these locations. The avalanche hazard will be High (Category 4). Unstable cornices continuing to form. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Good cover above 800m ICING: Freezing level remaining around 700m COMMENT: Unsettled winter conditions continuing. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 12/1/99 Heavy snowfall and strong winds have formed weakly bonded accumulations of windslab mainly above 800m in sheltered gullies and on slopes with a N to E aspect. Where these deposits lie on steeper slopes the avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). In areas exposed to the recent strong winds the snowpack has a firm icy crust AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 13/1/99 New snow and sleet with strengthening Westerly winds will continue to form unstable accumulations of windslab mainly above 800m in sheltered gullies and on slopes with a N to SE aspect. The avalanche hazard will remain Considerable (Category 3). Where deeper accumulations of windslab form, avalanches are likely in these areas. Fresh cornice formations will be prone to collapse. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow above 300m. ICING: Ice above 400m. COMMENT: Reasonable climbing conditions exist on buttresses above 800m but high winds and fresh windslab will require caution. SOUTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 12/1/99 Moderate snowfall on a changing wind has left fresh deposits on N through to SE aspects. New accumulations are weakly bonded above 900m on these aspects and cornices are unstable. The avalanche hazard is High (Category 4). Exposed slopes are scoured and icy. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 13/1/99 Some further snowfall tonight and tomorrow will maintain the current unstable period on N to SE aspects above 900m. Avalanches will occur on these aspects and cornices will remain unstable. The avalanche hazard will remain High (Category 4). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Good cover above 700m. ICING: All under snow at present. COMMENT: Good ski touring conditions. CREAG MEAGAIDH AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 12/1/99 Heavy snowfall on SW to NW winds have left areas of deep, very unstable windslab on steep slopes, and in hollows and gullies of all aspects above 750m. The soft slab is very weakly bonded to the old, hard snow beneath. The avalanche hazard is High (Category 4) and avalanche debris was noted in Coire a'Chriochairein. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 13/1/99 Further heavy falls of snow, with strong NW winds tonight becoming SW tomorrow, will continue to build areas of unstable windslab. Slopes of all aspects above 750m, in particular sheltered gullies and hollows, will be affected. Fresh, unstable cornices will form above many steep slopes. The avalanche hazard will be High (Category 4) and avalanches will occur. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Fresh snow cover at all levels. ICING: Mostly hollow and cruddy and now buried!
