CREAG MEAGAIDH AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 13/1/99 Heavy snowfall on SW to NW winds have left areas of deep, very unstable windslab on steep slopes, and in hollows and gullies of all aspects above 750m. The windslab is very weakly bonded to the old, hard snow beneath. The avalanche hazard is High (Category 4) and avalanches were observed on Sron a' Ghoire. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THUR 14/1/99 Further heavy falls of snow, with severe storm force Westerly winds tonight and tomorrow will continue to build areas of very unstable windslab. Slopes of all aspects above 750m, in particular sheltered gullies and hollows, will be affected. Fresh, unstable cornices will form above many steep slopes. The avalanche hazard will be High (Category 4) and avalanches will occur. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Fresh snow cover at all levels. ICING: Now buried! COMMENT: Gusts of 100 mph possible Thursday (14/1/99). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 14/1/99 New deposits of snow on steep slopes above 900m are only poorly to moderately bonded. In these areas where accumulations are greatest the avalanche hazard is High (Category 4). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 15/1/99 Further light to moderate snow overnight and tomorrow accompanied by very strong, mostly W to SW winds will maintain the current unstable conditions. On steep N to E aspects above 900m and particularly where any new cornice development occurs above exit gullies, avalanches will occur. The avalanche hazard remains High (Category 4). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Small amount of snow down to valley level with deeper drifting in higher sheltered locations. ICING: Steady build up. Cold conditions persisting. COMMENT: Poor mountain conditions expected to continue for Thursday. Cairngorm ski area stormbound on Wednesday. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 13/1/99 Heavy snowfall and strong winds have formed weakly bonded accumulations of windslab mainly above 800m in sheltered gullies and on slopes with a N, E and SE aspect. Where these deposits lie on steeper slopes the avalanche hazard is High (Category 4). In areas exposed to the recent strong winds the snowpack has a firm icy crust AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 14/1/99 New snow and storm force Westerly winds will continue to form unstable accumulations of layered windslab mainly above 750m in sheltered gullies and on slopes with a N to SE aspect. The avalanche hazard will remain High (Category 4) where deeper accumulations of windslab form, avalanches will occur in these areas. Unstable cornices will continue to form and be prone to collapse. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow above 300m. ICING: Ice above 400m. COMMENT: Very strong gusting Westerly winds and fresh unstable windslab will require immense caution. Ridges and buttresses are the safest option. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 13/1/98 Significant amounts of unstable windslab have formed in many locations overnight. Greatest accumulations are on sheltered steep slopes and gullies with N, NE and E aspects above 800m. Where this slab exists, it is weakly bonded. In these locations the avalanche hazard is High (Category 4). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 14/1/99 A strong to gale force Westerly airflow will deposit significant amounts of fresh unstable windslab overnight and through Thursday. Greatest accumulations will form on sheltered steep slopes and gullies with NE, E and SE aspects above 800m. Avalanches will occur in these locations. The avalanche hazard will be High (Category 4). Unstable cornices continuing to form. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Good cover above 700m ICING: Freezing level lowering to all levels overnight, rising to 300m on Thursday. COMMENT: High winds continuing. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SOUTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 13/1/99 Snowfall and redistributed snow are leaving accumulations in sheltered areas and gullies on N to SE aspects above 900m. Where snow exists in quantity it is weakly bonded and debris was noted in Lochnagar corrie. The avalanche hazard High (Category 4. Slopes exposed to the wind are scoured to expose an icy base. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 14/1/99 There will be some snowfall tomorrow with very strong winds from the W to SW. New accumulations will develop in sheltered locations on N to E aspects and be weakly bonded. Avalanches will occur on these aspects and cornices will be suspect. The avalanche hazard will be High (Category 4). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Good cover above 700m but its moving about in the strong winds at the moment! ICING: Building but under snow. COMMENT: Will be very windy tomorrow. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
