SOUTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 30/1/99 There was a period of instability overnight, which resulted in several avalanches and cornice collapses. This was followed by an inversion, which has left most of the snowpack very stable. Areas of soft snow exist on N to SE aspects above 950m and some cornices remain fragile. The avalanche hazard was Moderate (Category 2). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 31/1/99 With the freezing levels set to stay well over the summits overnight and throughout the day, snow will continue to soften. The majority of the snowpack will remain stable with greatest risk on steeper slopes on N to SE aspects. Some gullies will have large unstable cornices above them, which are likely to collapse. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Complete above 900m. ICING: Some areas of good ice are appearing from under the snow such as West Gully on Lochnagar.
