This interim service will continue until the start of regular daily Reports on 16/12/1999 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- sportscotland Avalanche Information Service Snow and Avalanche Report Issued at 16.15 hrs. Friday 3/12/1999 Snowfalls, locally substantial, in all parts of the Highlands, have created areas of windslab in many high mountain locations, mainly above 850 metres. Strong winds which have changed through most points of the compass during Thursday night, have distributed new snow on slopes of most aspects, although main accumulations are on North and East facing slopes. In places, mainly in locations above 950 metres on North and East aspects in the Caingorms and Lochaber areas, old snow-ice underlies the new windslab. In addition, new snow instabilities are present on slopes of most aspects. These conditions give rise to a Category 3 (Considerable) hazard of avalanche. Although the Cairngorms and Lochaber are most affected, significant snowfall is also reported above 150 metres in Glencoe, Torridon, Skye, Creag Meagaidh, Glenshee and other locations. Avalanche Hazard Outlook Saturday 4/12/1999 Forecasted cold conditions with strong North-Westerly winds will re-distribute lying snow as new windslab, mainly on to South and East aspects. Snow showers, mainly in Northern and Western ranges, will additionally load these slopes. The hazard presented by snow-ice underlying windslab on slopes mainly above 950 metres on North and East aspects, will also persist. A Category 3 (Considerable) hazard of avalanche will continue to exist. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
