sportscotland Avalanche Information Service Snow and Avalanche Report Issued at 16.15 hrs. Saturday 4/12/1999 There has been some additional snowfall in most parts of the Highlands, maintaining areas of windslab in many high mountain locations, mainly above 850 metres. Winds have been North-Westerly, forming fresh accumulations, particularly on South- East facing slopes. In places, mostly on North and East facing slopes above 950 metres in the Caingorms and Lochaber areas, old snow-ice underlies existing windslab. Surface instabilities are still present on slopes of most aspects. These conditions give rise to a Category 3 (Considerable) hazard of avalanche. Although the Cairngorms and Lochaber are most affected, early winter conditions also prevail in Glencoe, Torridon, Skye, Creag Meagaidh, Glenshee and other locations. Avalanche Hazard Outlook Sunday 5/12/1999 Forecasted cold conditions with North-Westerly winds will cause some new windslab build-up, mainly on South and East aspects. Snow showers will be followed by rain later in the day. Avalanches are likely on slopes of most aspects, mainly at the tops of gullies and scarp slopes and especially in Lochaber and the Cairngorms. A Category 3 (Considerable) hazard of avalanche will continue to exist. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
