sportscotland Avalanche Information Service Snow and Avalanche Report Issued at 15.30 hrs. Wednesday 8/12/1999 Continued snow showers have led to some new build-up in corries and other accumulation zones above 850 metres in most Highland mountain areas. Rain at lower levels has seen the snowline in most regions rise to between 700 and 800 metres, 500 metres in the North Cairngorms. Main accumulations in most ranges are on North and East facing slopes above 850 metres, with Lochaber and the Cairngorms again holding most snow. Localised remnants of old snow-ice underlie the new slab in these high locations. The avalanche hazard in these areas is Category 3 (Considerable). Avalanche Hazard Outlook Thursday 9/12/1999 Freezing conditions on the highest summits will lead to some additional slab build-up on higher North and Easterly aspects, mostly above 850 metres. Lochaber and the Cairngorms are again most stongly indicated. Some significant accumulations will exist, and there will be drifting in strong winds. Instabilities will be present where new accumulations are greatest on steep mainly North and Easterly aspects, especially where re-frozen old snow underlies. A Category 3 (Considerable) hazard of avalanche will prevail in these localised areas. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Re-send at 15.50 hrs. sportscotland Avalanche Information Service Snow and Avalanche Report Issued at 15.30 hrs.
