NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS THU 6-1-00 The rain turned to snow when the freezing level dropped last night. Today the new dusting is on the near surface crust in lee aspects while Northerly winds erode cornices. The basal snowpack still has the widespread deeper crust giving clean shear results, moderate to easy by shovel test. The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3) due to new slab on steep South and South-East aspects AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 7-1-00 More snow will load again on North-East aspect tonight. Avalanches will occur on North and South aspects due to the rising freezing level and rain. The new load and warming will create stress at the deeper crust interface. The avalanche hazard will be High (Category 4). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Dusting on crust in lee locations. ICING: Ice is fattening up on the steep and narrow. COMMENT: Another melt-freeze cycle is on the way. Good snow stability during the freeze except for new slab, poor stability of the deeper pack during the thaw. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS THU 6/1/00 Cold conditions overnight and during Thursday have stabilised the existing snowpack at all levels. Isolated areas of unstable fresh windslab are present on sheltered scarp slopes and at the tops of gullies. Greatest accumulations are on N through to E aspects above 900m. In these locations where sufficient accumulations occur the avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). Elsewhere the snowpack is well frozen and generally stable. Wet snow avalanche debris observed on many NE aspects. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 7/1/00 Colder conditions will be replaced by thaw conditions overnight and during Friday. Snow turning to heavy rain will produce a wet snow pack at all levels. Areas of weakly bonded snow will exist in sheltered locations above 900m. Greatest accumulations will be on steep slopes, tops of gullies and scarp slopes with N through to E aspects. Avalanches are likely in these locations. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). Cornices prone to collapse. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Main cover in N and E facing corries above 800m at present. ICING: Freezing level rising above the summits by Friday. COMMENT: Strong to gale force winds, and back to the wet again by Friday. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS THU 6/1/00 Colder conditions during Wednesday night have consolidated the wet snowpack creating a firm icy surface crust above 500m. The snowpack is generally well bonded at all levels. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 7/1/00 Heavy rain and milder conditions during Thursday night and on Friday morning with strong SW winds. This will moisten the snowpack at all levels. Steep slopes will have wet moderately bonded snow where small wet snow avalanches are likely. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3) where these conditions exist. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow above 650m. ICING: Ice reforming above 400m. COMMENT: Very mild and wet conditions will moisten the snowpack at all levels. SOUTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS THU 6/1/00 A dusting of new snow above 900 metres has had no significant impact on the snowpack, which due to the recent melt freeze cycle is firm and stable on all aspects. There is the occasional pocket of fresh snow on E to SW aspects but the avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 7/1/00 There will be a period of instability overnight on N to E aspects where the combination of freshly deposited snow and rising temperatures will destabilise the surface layers. Further heavy rain and a freezing level of 1800 metres will leave the snow wet but generally well bonded. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Hard and icy with most amounts in corries. ICING: Much improved after recent melt/freeze cycle. COMMENT: Weather likely to give unpleasant mountain conditions on Friday. CREAG MEAGAIDH AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS THU 6/1/00 With only a trace of fresh snow last night, followed by very cold and calm conditions, there has been a significant consolidation of the snowpack. Moderately well bonded hard slab remains on N through E to SE aspects above 700 metres. Large cornices are still evident above the same aspects . The avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 7/1/00 Fresh windslab accumulations will build for a time overnight on N through E to SE aspects above 900 metres before a significant rise in temperature pushes the freezing level well above the summits. Wet slab avalanches and cornice collapse is likely, particularly on N through E to SE aspects. The avalanche hazard will increase to Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Good cover above 700 metres. ICING: Plenty in the Inner Coire but still buried by snow in some places. COMMENT: With large cornice collapse likely, beware of avalanche run out zones. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
