Update to Snow and Avalanche Report Issued at 19.00 hrs Wednesday 26/4/2000 Further to the final Report of the season issued on Sunday hill-goers are advised that the Report remains in force due to a continuation of the storm cycle. Persistent heavy snowfall has created substantial new snow deposits above 600 metres in most highland ranges. Strong but variable winds have maintained avalanche hazard on most slope aspects. Additional snowfall overnight, very heavy in some areas, will further increase snow loading. A rise in temperature on Thursday, with positive temperatures near the summits, will give rise to a period of extreme instability. The avalanche hazard in all affected areas will be Category 4 (High) and avalanches, potentially very large, will occur on most slope aspects above 650 metres. This update will not be withdrawn. Avalanche hazard is likely to persist for a number of days. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
