NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 16/12/05 Continuing Northerly winds with very light snow showers have affected the area, leaving trace amounts of snow lying in sheltered areas. Old snow lies in isolated patches above 900 metres on all aspects. The snowpack is well bonded and stable. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 2). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 17/12/05 Northerly winds with snow showers will continue overnight and during the day. Snow will fall at all levels and accumulations will develop on Southerly aspects. Due to the new snow lying on hard old snow patches, the avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Hard icy snow patches on all aspects above 900m. ICING: Gullies incomplete with traces of old snow, buttresses are black. COMMENT: Very cold on the summits in the bitter wind. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 16/12/05 There is an old and sparse snowpack with accumulations generally restricted to gullies and scarp slopes above 1100m. This snow is refrozen and stable. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 17/12/05 Cold and dry conditions are expected to continue overnight and during Saturday. Snow stability will remain good. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Patchy cover in N and E facing corries. ICING: Old snow remaining frozen at all levels.
