NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 18/12/05 North-Westerly winds have increased and backed to the West during the morning carrying light snow showers above 950 metres. Small accumulations have formed in sheltered locations on North- Easterly aspects. Patches of well-bonded old snow remain on all aspects above 900 metres. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 19/12/05 Snow showers will fall on strong North-West becoming Westerly winds. Accumulations will form on sheltered Easterly to South-East aspects above 600 metres. Due to the new snow lying on hard old snow patches the avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Hard icy snow patches remain on all aspects above 900m. ICING: Buttresses covered in thin rime with some ice forming on slabby areas, ground well frozen. COMMENT: Icy sections developing on footpaths. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 18/12/05 There is a very light dusting of fresh snow above 1000m, but there are no significant accumulations. The main snow deposits continue to be localised areas of old snow, mainly in the higher gullies and on scarp slopes. Snowpack stability is good. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 19/12/05 Scattered showers from the West are expected to fall as snow above 600m tonight and then 800m on Monday morning. There may be some drifting on North and East aspects but accumulations are not expected to be significant. The snowpack will remain stable and well bonded. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Re-frozen and well bonded snow found on North and East facing slopes.
