NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS
AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 20/12/05
There has been light drizzle on strong Westerly winds as freezing
levels have steadily risen to above the summits.  The existing
windslab lying mainly on sheltered Easterly aspects above 950
metres has slowly bonded and showed good stability.  The
avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1).

AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 21/12/05
Heavy rain overnight will turn to snow showers during the day on
strong Westerly winds.  New accumulations of slab will form on
sheltered North-East to South-East aspects above 800 metres.  Due
to the new snow lying on hard old snow patches the avalanche
hazard will be Moderate (Category 2).


CLIMBING CONDITIONS 

SNOW DISTRIBUTION:  Large areas of snow still existing on the plateau.

ICING:  Some ice present in easier grade gullies.

COMMENT:  Winter returns tomorrow!




LOCHABER
AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 20/12/05
Westerly winds and light snow showers have deposited a layer of
windslab at the top of East facing slopes above 950m.  Some
instability between the new windslab and old re-frozen snow was
present.  On other aspects patchy, stable old snow can be found.
The avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2).

AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 21/12/05
Strong South-Westerly winds and rain overnight, will change to
North-Westerly winds and snow showers by Wednesday. The existing
snowpack is expected to stabilise overnight, however, any new
accumulations of windslab on North-East to South-East aspects may
cause further instabilities.  The avalanche hazard will be
Moderate (Category 2).


CLIMBING CONDITIONS 

SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Light snow cover found above 
900m but any drifting restricted to East facing slopes.

ICING: Ice only found on summits.

COMMENT:  Winter on the tops tomorrow.
