NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 21/12/05 Overnight rain at all levels has penetrated the snowpack. During the day colder temperatures have resulted in a re-freezing of the snowpack which exists in sparse sheltered aspects above 900 metres. The snowpack is generally well bonded and stable. The avalanche hazard is low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 22/12/05 During the day South-Westerly winds will bring snow which will turn to rain as the temperature rises. The snowpack which exists mainly above 900 metres on all aspects will continue to stabilise. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Sparse snow patches above 900m with greater accumulations on the plateau. ICING: Icy and hard snow patches. Black buttresses COMMENT: Expect a warm and wet day on the hills. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 21/12/05 Showers from the West have deposited a dusting of snow above 850m today. Any accumulations of wind slab that had formed yesterday on East facing slopes have stabilised with the rising temperature over night, leaving a well bonded snow pack. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 22/12/05 The freezing level at 1000m tonight, will rise to above the summits by Thursday as South-Westerly winds bring rain showers. This will saturate the present snowpack leaving it stable. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Light snow cover above 850m, with main accumulations in gullies and on East facing slopes.
