GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 26/12/05 Dry and cold conditions have continued to affect the area. A trace of snow and small patches of old refrozen snow exist in sheltered North and East facing corries but mainly in gullies above 950 metres. Ice has formed on many paths and rocks. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 27/12/05 Dry cold conditions will continue through Tuesday with moderate Easterly winds. A trace of snow above 950m will remain and old snow patches will be stable. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Light cover on North and East slopes and gullies above 950 metres. ICING: Verglas on paths and on rocks above 150m. COMMENT: "MERRY CHRISTMAS" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SOUTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 26/12/05 A combination of rime ice and a trace of new snow have given the hills a superficial wintry appearance above 850 metres. Limited patches of firm old snow are to be found on NE through SE to S aspects above 900 metres with the largest areas being found high on the Cairngorm Plateau. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 27/12/05 It will be a cold but dry day with the freezing level lowering to 300 metres. As no new snow has been forecast the wintry appearance will remain superficial. Patchy well consolidated snow will be found in sheltered locations on NE through SE to S aspects above 900 metres. This old snow will continue to provide firm conditions underfoot. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Patchy but very firm old snow can be found above 900 metres. ICING:Rocks rimed up above 850 metres, turf firming up. COMMENT: Just enough snow and rime ice around to give slippy conditions underfoot in places. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CREAG MEAGAIDH AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 26/12/05 Monday was another dry day with summit temperatures around freezing. What remains of the snowpack is re-frozen and tightly bonded but is limited to isolated snow patches in hollows above 850 metres, coire rims and gully tops. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 27/12/05 It will be colder with light to moderate North East to East winds and some light, sporadic overnight snow showers. A light dusting of snow is possible but this will bring little change to the current Low (Category 1) hazard of avalanche. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Poor. ICING: Freezing level 300m on Tuesday. COMMENT: Creag Meagaidh was very quiet on Boxing Day. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 26/12/05 Conditions were found to be cold and dry, with light winds on the summits. The limited snow on high North and East facing slopes remains stable. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 27/12/05 The dry conditions are expected to continue through the night and into Tuesday, with cold winds from the East. The snowpack will remains stable as no snow is expected to fall. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Frozen snow found on high North and East aspects. ICING: Freezing level down to 300m. COMMENT: The temperature will continue getting colder. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 26/12/05 It has been a day of drizzle and light North-Easterly winds on the summits. The patchy snowpack lying mainly above 900 metres on Southerly aspects is generally well bonded and stable. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 27/12/05 Light Easterly winds with no precipitation and cold temperatures will affect the mountains. The snowpack will continue to strengthen and stabilise where it lies in isolated areas mainly above 900 metres. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Limited - Hard and icy where it lies above 900m and mainly Southerly aspects. ICING: Some rime developing above 950 m.
