NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 27/12/05 With cold temperatures persisting throughout the day and no snowfall, the snowpack has refrozen. Where the snow lies above 900 metres it is well bonded and stable. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 28/12/05 Continuing cold South-East winds will continue with occasional snow showers affecting the hills. The limited snowpack found above 900 metres on all aspects will remain generally stable and well bonded. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Sparse above 900m. Larger patches on Caingorm plateau - snow is rock hard! ICING: Light frosting on buttresses. COMMENT: A bitterly cold day expected. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 27/12/05 Dry conditions and a South Easterly wind affect the area today. The old snow found in gullies and on high East aspects is hard and stable. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 28/12/05 The weather will continue to be dry and cold overnight and through into Wednesday with the freezing level down to 150m. The snowpack will remain stable. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Areas of old, hard snow found in gullies above 900m and on high East facing slopes. ICING: Flat ice forming in areas above 600m. Light rime ice on the highest cliffs. COMMENT: Conditions will remain cold but no snow expected. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 27/12/05 Dry and cold conditions have continued to affect the area. A trace of snow and small patches of old re-frozen snow exist in sheltered North and East facing corries but mainly in gullies above 950 metres. Ice has formed on many paths and rocks. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 28/12/05 Dry cold conditions will continue through Wednesday with moderate South-Easterly winds. A trace of snow above 950m will remain and old snow patches will be stable. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Light cover on North and East slopes and gullies above 950 metres. ICING: Verglas on paths and on rocks above 150m. COMMENT: Remaining cold and dry. SOUTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 27/12/05 There has been a trace of new snow from valley level but amounts are insignificant in terms of the avalanche hazard. Limited patches of firm old snow are to be found on NE through SE to S aspects above 900 metres with Ben Avon and Beinn a'Bhuird holding larger areas. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 28/12/05 The area will receive a trace of fresh snow but amounts are expected to be insignificant. Patchy well consolidated snow will be found in sheltered locations on NE through SE to S aspects above 900 metres. This old snow will continue to provide firm conditions underfoot. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Patchy old snow can be found above 900 metres with a trace of new snow at all levels. ICING: Water courses starting to freeze up. COMMENT: Just enough snow and rime ice around to give slippy conditions underfoot in places. CREAG MEAGAIDH AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 27/12/05 Tuesday was a cold and dry day. Winds have been light or negligible and there has been a light dusting of snow at all levels. The snowpack consists of patches above 850 metres and remains unchanged although snow surface conditions are now hard and crusty. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 28/12/05 Dry, cold conditions will continue overnight and throughout Wednesday. All snow patches will remain re-frozen and stable. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Poor. Larger patches above 900m. ICING: Colder overnight and on Wednesday with freezing level at 150m.
