NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 28/12/05 A light dusting of snow has fallen above 900 metres on all aspects carried by the light South-Easterly winds. Some accumulations of new snow have occurred in lee areas such as corrie rims and gully exits on North to North-West facing slopes above 950 metres . Here the new snow is weakly bonded to the old hard snowpack. The avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 29/12/05 Cold dry, light South-Easterly winds will continue to affect the region throughout the day. Some drifting of the new snow will take place and small accumulations will occur on corrie rims and gully exits above 950 metres on North to North-West aspects. Here the new snow will be weakly bonded to the old snowpack. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate ( Category 2). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: A light dusting of new snow adds to the winter ambiance. ICING: Frosting and light riming on buttresses, frozen ground. COMMENT: Good walking on mountains, hard and icy snow patches on plateau - very cold in the breeze. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 28/12/05 The cold and dry conditions are continuing and there is little change to the existing patchy stable snowpack. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 29/12/05 A cold, dry South-East airflow will continue overnight and during Thursday. The snowpack will remain hard frozen and stable. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Patchy cover in high North and East facing corries. ICING: Freezing at all levels. Water ice forming on many paths. COMMENT: Conditions remaining cold with no new snow expected. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 28/12/05 Dry and cold conditions have continued to affect the area. A trace of snow and small patches of old re-frozen snow exist in sheltered North and East facing corries but mainly in gullies above 950 metres. Ice has formed on many paths and rocks. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 29/12/05 Dry cold conditions will continue through Thursday with fresh South-Easterly winds. A trace of snow above 950m will remain and old snow patches will be stable. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Light cover on North and East slopes and gullies above 950 metres. ICING: Verglas on paths and on rocks above 150m. COMMENT: Remaining cold and dry with freezing level around 100m. SOUTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 28/12/05 There has been a trace of fresh snow overnight with slight accumulations forming in sheltered locations but at present these are insufficient to alter the avalanche hazard. Limited patches of firm old snow are to be found on NE through SE to S aspects above 900 metres with Ben Avon and Beinn a'Bhuird holding larger areas. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 29/12/05 It will remain very cold but no new snow has been forecast. Occasional pockets of dry light snow will be found from valley level. Limited areas of firm well consolidated old snow will exist in sheltered locations on NE through SE to S aspects above 900 metres. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Old snow patches exist above 900 metres with a light covering of new snow at all levels. ICING: Remaining very cold. COMMENT: Snow covered water ice exists on paths. CREAG MEAGAIDH AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 28/12/05 It has been a cold and sunny day with very little cloud cover. There has been no fresh snow although a heavy frost persists above 900 metres. The snowpack remains sparse with isolated patches only above 850 metres. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 29/12/05 The dry and cold conditions will persist overnight and through Thursday. There will be no change to the snowpack: the existing patches of snow will remain frozen and stable. The avalanche hazard will remain Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: A dusting of snow on summits with only a few isolated patches above 850m. ICING: Remaining cold with freezing level 200m. COMMENT: Crisp!
