NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS THU 5/1/06 There have been strong winds from the South-East with light precipitation falling as snow above 700 metres. New accumulations of windslab have formed on steep sheltered North-Westerly aspects above 1000 metres. When tested on a North-West aspect at 1110 metres some instability occurred between the new slab layers. The avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 6/1/06 Cold temperatures and strong South-Easterly winds will continue with light snow. Windslab will build on steep sheltered West to North aspects above 950 metres. Isolated areas of instability will be present particularly where deeper pockets lie. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Areas of hard snow above 1000 metres. ICING: Buttresses beginning to rime up again. COMMENT: Bitterly cold conditions in the mountains. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS THU 5/1/06 Cold conditions have continued to re-freeze the old wet snowpack. Snowpack stability is good. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 6/1/06 Cold and dry conditions will continue overnight and during Friday. The snowpack will remain frozen and stable. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Main accumulations above 1000m in North and East facing corries. ICING: Freezing level remaining at around 500m. COMMENT: Old snow becoming hard frozen. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS THU 5/1/06 Cold and mainly dry conditions have left the snowpack in a well bonded condition. Above 950 metres the odd pocket of shallow windslab exists in sheltered summit gullies. These accumulations are isolated and are generally avoidable. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 6/1/06 Dry and cold conditions will continue to affect the area. The snowpack will remain well bonded in most areas but strong winds from the South will form pockets of fresh windslab in the most sheltered areas above 950 metres. These accumulations are not expected to be significant and should generally be avoidable. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow above 900 metres. ICING: Freezing level 450 metres. COMMENT: Slopes with a North-West to North-Easterly aspect above 900 metres have the best snow cover. SOUTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS THU 5/1/06 The light snow showers and cold winds have not altered the current snow condition which remains well bonded on all aspects. Deepest accumulations are to be found on W to N aspects above 900 metres. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 6/1/06 The windy and cold conditions will continue but with only a slight dusting of new snow there will be little effect on the current situation. The general cover will remain thin with some deeper accumulations being found in sheltered locations on mainly W to N aspects above 900 metres. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Very thin with deeper drifts on W to N aspects. ICING: There is ice on the crags but conditions remain lean. COMMENT: Plenty of ice on the footpaths! CREAG MEAGAIDH AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS THU 5/1/06 Thursday was a cold day with a trace of new snow carried on moderate South-East winds. These weather conditions have brought no change to the generally tightly bonded and stable snowpack.
