NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 24/1/06 It has been a dry and misty day on the tops. The remaining snowpack has continued to stabilise in the moist conditions. The snowpack is generally well bonded and stable. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 25/1/06 Light Northerly winds with slightly cooler temperatures are expected during the morning, becoming slightly warmer in the afternoon. The snowpack that remains in localised areas above 900 metres will continue to stabilise. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Firm snow remains in large patches on plateau. ICING: Ice and some good climbing still remaining. COMMENT: Cool nights should help remaining snow to hold out. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 24/1/06 With the freezing level above the summits today, the snow continues to thaw and there have been no new deposits. The snowpack that remains is generally stable and well-bonded. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 25/1/06 Fine and dry conditions with light North-Easterly winds are expected overnight and on Wednesday. The snowpack will consolidate further and remain stable and well-bonded. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Steep slopes on North to East aspects and sheltered areas above 1000m. Gullies still holding snow. ICING: Cliffs are wet and black. COMMENT: Cooler temperatures may leave some ground frozen. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 24/1/06 A mild damp day has affected the area, diminishing the snow cover. The remaining snowpack is moist but generally stable on all but the very steepest slopes. These areas tend to be around the tops of sheltered gullies and scarp slopes with a North to Easterly aspect above 1000 metres where localised wet snow instabilities exist. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 25/1/06 High pressure should bring a fine dry day with light North-East winds. The moist snowpack will consolidate above 900 metres as cooler weather affects the area improving snowpack stability. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow above 850 metres. ICING: Wet bulb freezing level around 900 metres. COMMENT: Cooler conditions but no new snow. SOUTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 24/1/06 With the freezing level just above the summits today there has been little change to the current situation. The patchy remaining snow is soft but generally well bonded. Some deeper areas of snow can be found in sheltered locations on N through E to SE aspects above 1000 metres. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 25/1/06 With the freezing level forecast to lower to 1200 metres surface layers will start to firm up on the higher summits. Generally the remaining patchy snow will be soft but well bonded with some deeper areas being found in sheltered locations on N through E to SE aspects above 1000 metres. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Thin cover mainly above 1000 metres. ICING: Some thawing remnants. COMMENT: Beinn a'Bhuird corries still have plenty of snow in them. Buttresses are black but they do have some ice in places. CREAG MEAGAIDH AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 24/1/06 It has been a mild, dry and overcast day. Slow thaw conditions persist with only isolated patches of snow below 800 metres. The remaining snowpack is soft and wet although well bonded and stable. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 25/1/06 Slightly cooler conditions will prevail overnight and on Wednesday with an area of high pressure continuing to give fine dry weather. The snowpack will remain stable. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Only isolated patches remain below 800 metres.
