NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 25/1/06 It has been a misty and cold day on the tops. The cooler temperatures have resulted in a refreezing of the snowpack. The snowpack that lies in scattered patches above 900 metres is well bonded and stable, The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 26/1/06 Light dry North-Easterly to Easterly winds are expected and cold temperatures are to persist on the tops with a freezing level at 600 metres. The snowpack that remains above 900 m on all aspects will continue to refreeze and become generally well bonded and stable.The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: More extensive snow cover above 1000m on SE facing slopes. ICING: Very firm and icy conditions with ice glazed rocks above 1000m. Good snow-ice in gullies COMMENT: Continuing cold. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 25/1/06 Colder overnight temperatures followed by warmer temperatures during today are continuing to consolidate the existing snowpack. Snowpack stability remains generally good. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 26/1/06 The current dry conditions will continue with little change to the existing snowpack. Snowpack stability will remain good. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Main snow accumulations on North and East aspects above 1000m. ICING: Snow surface remaining frozen but may begin to thaw on the summits due to a temperature inversion. COMMENT: Remaining dry and clear. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 25/1/06 The cold dry weather system has re-frozen the moist snowpack. The snowpack is stable on all slopes. The greatest accumulations of snow are in and around the tops of sheltered gullies and on slopes with a North to Easterly aspect above 950m. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 26/1/06 High pressure should continue to bring fine dry and cold weather with moderate North-East winds. Above 900 metres the snowpack will consolidate further leaving an icy surface layer: this will maintain good stability on all slopes. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow above 850 metres. ICING: Wet bulb freezing level around 400 metres. COMMENT: Cold dry conditions but no new snow. SOUTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 25/1/06 It was a cool day with only a light dusting of snow in places. Patchy remaining snow is re-freezing and is well bonded with greatest amounts to be found in sheltered locations on N through E to SE aspects above 1000 metres. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 26/1/06 It will continue to be cold but with no new snowfall conditions will remain the same. The re-frozen patchy snow cover will be well bonded with largest areas found in sheltered locations on N through E to SE aspects above 1000 metres. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Patchy with most amounts in corries above 950 metres. ICING: Turf is re-freezing, with limited ice of variable quality around. COMMENT: Some easier gullies are just about complete. CREAG MEAGAIDH AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 25/1/06 Wednesday was a dry, bright day with somewhat cooler temperatures than of late. The snowpack consists of patches of snow above 850 metres, some of which are quite large. Although there are moist layers within the snowpack, stability remains good in all locations and at all altitudes. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 26/1/06 Cold, dry conditions will persist overnight and on Thursday. A local temperature inversion may bring about summit temperatures that are just above freezing.. The snowpack will again remain well stabilised and the surface condition of lower altitude snow patches will become hard and crusty. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Sizeable patches of snow on Carn Liath plateau above 900m. ICING: Freezing at 600m overnight and on Thursday. COMMENT: Pleasant day up high.
