NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS THU 26/1/06 It has been a dry sunny day with light Easterly winds. The snowpack lies in patches above 900 metres. Due to the cold temperatures the snowpack has remained well bonded and stable. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 27/1/06 It will be another dry day with light winds from the North-East and the freezing level will be as low as 750 metres. The snowpack which lies in patches on all aspects above 900 metres will remain well bonded and stable. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Patchy areas of old hard snow above 900m, more extensive on SE aspects above 1000m. ICING: Ground well frozen, verglas on rocks in boulder fields, thin but good snow-ice in gullies. COMMENT: Remaining settled and cold. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS THU 26/1/06 In the area today it has been fine and dry with a light North- Easterly wind. The remaining re-frozen snow is present on steep slopes with North to East aspects above 1000m. Snowpack stability is generally good. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 27/1/06 The settled conditions and light North-Easterly winds are expected to continue overnight and on Friday. No new snow deposits are expected. The snowpack will stabilise further and remain generally well-bonded. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Main accumulations on North to East aspects above 1000m. ICING: High gullies have hard snow-ice. Turf re-freezing. Freezing level above 750m tomorrow. COMMENT: Dry and clear conditions continue. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS THU 26/1/06 The continuing cold dry weather system has consolidated the snowpack. The snowpack is stable on all slopes. The greatest accumulations of snow are in and around the tops of sheltered gullies and on slopes with a North to Easterly aspect above 950 metres. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 27/1/06 High pressure should continue to bring fine dry and cold weather with moderate North-East winds. Above 900 metres the snowpack will consolidate further leaving an icy surface layer: this will maintain good stability on all slopes. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow above 850 metres. ICING: Wet bulb freezing level around 700 metres. COMMENT: Cold dry conditions but no new snow. SOUTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS THU 26/1/06 There was a trace of fresh snow today that settled above 800 metres. The old patchy snow is well bonded with re-frozen surface layers. Largest areas are to be found in sheltered locations on N through E to SE aspects above 1000 metres. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 27/1/06 There will be little change to the current situation. The re-frozen patchy snow will be well bonded with largest areas being found in sheltered locations on N through E to SE aspects above 1000 metres. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Patchy with largest areas in corries above 950 metres. ICING: Turf is re-freezing with limited ice of variable quality around. COMMENT: Some easy gullies are just about complete. CREAG MEAGAIDH AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS THU 26/1/06 High cloud cleared to leave a cold, dry and bright day. Heavily shaded North to North-East aspects above 900 metres stayed below freezing all day and what remains of the snowpack in these places has a hard or crusty surface. Cold, calm conditions encouraged the growth of some surface hoar crystals. Stability remains good in all locations. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 27/1/06 The weather will remain dry and relatively cool overnight and during Friday. All snow patches will re-freeze and be stable. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Bigger patches above 900m with ribbons of variable quality snow-ice extending down some gully lines.
