LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 27/1/06 The dry and cold weather is continuing with the snow remaining frozen at all levels. Re-frozen snow is present mainly on steep slopes with a North, North-East and East aspect above 1000m. Snowpack stability is generally good. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 28/1/06 The settled conditions and light North-Easterly winds are expected to continue overnight and during Saturday. No new snow deposits are expected. The snowpack will remain well bonded and stable. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Main accumulations on North to East aspects above 1000m. COMMENT: Dry and cold conditions continue. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 27/1/06 It has been cold with light snow showers on Easterly winds. The old snowpack which lies on all aspects above 900 metres remains well bonded and stable with a light dusting of new snow down to 600 metres. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 28/1/06 Snow showers on light North-East winds will deposit new accumulations of fresh snow on South to West aspects above 600 metres. Some instability will develop on steep aspects where deeper deposits lie. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Skiable patches of old hard snow on the plateau. ICING: Thin but well frozen snow-ice in gullies with a light dusting of snow on buttresses. COMMENT: Poor visibility in the Cairngorms today, continuing settled and cold. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 27/1/06 The continuing cold dry weather system has consolidated the snowpack. The snowpack is stable on all slopes. The greatest accumulations of snow are in and around the tops of sheltered gullies and on slopes with a North to Easterly aspect above 950m. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 28/1/06 High pressure will continue to bring settled dry and cold weather with moderate North-Easterly winds. Above 900m the snowpack will consolidate further leaving an icy surface layer maintaining good stability on all slopes. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow above 850 metres but mainly in the highest North and East facing corries. ICING: Freezing level 750 metres, light cover of rime on the highest rocks. COMMENT: Settled dry conditions but no new snow. SOUTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 27/1/06 There is a light dusting of new snow from around 700 metres. The patchy old snow has refrozen and is well bonded. Greatest amounts are to be found in sheltered locations on N through E to SE aspects above 1000 metres. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 28/1/06 There will be no change to the current situation. The refrozen patchy snow will be well bonded with largest amounts being found in sheltered locations on N through E to SE aspects above 1000 metres. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Patchy with most amounts around corrie rims above 950 metres. ICING: Both turf and limited ice have refrozen. COMMENT: Some easy gullies are just about complete, with well bonded old snow. CREAG MEAGAIDH AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 27/1/06 It's been cold, overcast and for the most part dry although there were some very light snow flurries after midday. The snowpack is limited to refrozen snow patches above 900 metres on steep North East to South East aspects. There was a dusting of light snow near summits but this has brought little change to stability which remains good in all locations. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 28/1/06 It will again remain cold and dry overnight and during Saturday. All snow patches will be frozen and well stabilised. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Bigger snow patches above 900m but very little below this altitude.
