NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS THU 2/2/06 It has been a dry sunny day with a cool North-Westerly breeze. The snowpack which lies on all aspects above 900 metres is well bonded and stable. A thin soft covering of snow lies on all aspects above 600 metres. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 3/2/06 The settled and dry conditions will continue with light winds from the South-West. The snowpack which lies on all aspects above 900 metres will remain well bonded and stable with a thin covering of soft snow. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: A thin covering of soft snow down to 600m, patches of old hard snow lie above 900m. ICING: Limited ice around, but suprisingly good on select routes. COMMENT: Serious run outs on some steep snow-ice slopes. Corrie paths becoming quite icy. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS THU 2/2/06 The dry conditions are continuing with the snowpack gradually weakening due to the cold temperatures. Snow stability remains good. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 3/2/06 The dry conditions will continue but the general temperature will gradually increase over the next 24 hours. Snowpack stability will remain generally good. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Patchy cover remains on high North and East aspects. ICING: Water ice still affecting many paths and open hillsides. COMMENT: Might be some snow next week if we are lucky! GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS THU 2/2/06 Settled weather over the last few days has consolidated the snowpack giving generally good stability on all slopes. The greatest accumulations of snow are in and around the tops of sheltered gullies and on slopes with a North to Easterly aspect above 950m. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 3/2/06 The settled and dry conditions will continue with fresh South- Westerly winds. Mild temperatures will soften the snowpack in some areas but this should not affect the overall stability of the snowpack, which will remain good on most slopes. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Most of the snow lies in the highest North and East facing corries and gullies. ICING: Thin ice on upper rocks and in watercourses. COMMENT: Settled and dry conditions will continue but becoming generally milder. Possibility of falling rocks. SOUTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS THU 2/2/06 It has been another stunning day with a cloudless sky and light winds. The snow cover is very patchy with variable conditions including ice, light sugary crystals, breakable crust and some wet thawing snow. The snow is stable at all levels. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 3/2/06 It will remain settled with a cold start before the day gradually warms up. Areas exposed to the sun will soften but all snow will continue to be well bonded and stable. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Greatest snow accumulations are around corrie rims above 950 metres. Thin cover elsewhere. ICING: Ice is forming where there has been snow melt or another moisture source but there is very little at Eagles Rocks or Creag an Dubh-loch. COMMENT: Watch out for the icy boulders when crossing burns! CREAG MEAGAIDH AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS THU 2/2/06 A weak temperature inversion gave summit temperatures that were close to freezing overnight and just above during Thursday. The largest snow patches are to be found on plateau areas above 1000 metres that face North-East to South-East. Corrie rims and gullies of similar aspects and close to 900 metres also carry ribbons of old snow. There is a surface layer of moist but well stabilised snow which overlies a tightly bonded snowpack. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 3/2/06 High pressure will maintain dry conditions. Milder daytime temperatures will moisten the surface of all snow patches but stability will remain good. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Remains poor. Snow-ice extends part way down some gullies but very few are complete. ICING: Crags looking black again.
