Freeriders - Avalanche Awareness Days 2013
In 2011, the sportscotland Avalanche Information Service (SAIS) teamed up with Snowsport Scotland to bring practical training sessions that were tailored towards Scottish skiers and snowboarders venturing off piste exploring slopes and gullies to take advantage of the good snow cover. After much interest and positive feedback from the pilot courses, we aim to run further Avalanche Awareness for Freeriders 1 for season 2013.
Sunday 17th of March – Avalanche Awareness for Freeriders 1 Cairngorm Mountain.
Sunday 24th of March - Avalanche Awareness for Freeriders 2 Glenshee
Avalanche Awareness for Freeriders (1) will be similar to previous courses, with a rough outline below:
9.30am Meet in cafe at car park. Discuss day plan.
9.45-10.30am Route planning and search techniques. (indoors)
10.30 – 12.30pm Equipment and how to use it (outside)
12.30-1.30pm Lunch
1.30-3.30pm Exercise in Avalanche site
Summary of Day
The awareness day will cover tips on trip planning, the essentials regarding what to carry with you and how to use it in the event of an avalanche.
The course cost will be £45. Uplift ticket £TBC Ratio 1:10
The courses will be supported by Anatom, who will provide shovels, transceivers and probes and training help.
The awareness courses will be led by members of the SAIS who are experienced skiers and International Mountain Guides.
Avalanche Awareness for Freeriders (2) will be similar to previous courses, with a rough outline below:
NB this day is very much determined by weather conditions and activities may be modified in consideration of this, therefore more theory may be carried out indoors.

9.45-10.30am Understanding snow, Route planning and decision making.
10.30 – 12.30pm Review of transceivers and search techniques Understanding snow and route choice(outside)
12.30-1.30pm Lunch
1.30-3.30pm Route choice continued
Summary of Day
The awareness day will cover tips on trip planning, fundamentals of snowpack change and using the information available to help with planning and determining avalanche hazard. Route choice using piste and near piste terrain.
The course cost will be £50. Uplift ticket £TBC Ratio 1:6
The courses will be supported by Anatom, who will provide shovels, transceivers and probes and training help.
The awareness courses will be led by members of the SAIS who are experienced skiers and International Mountain Guides.
