AVALANCHE HAZARD THU 05/02/2009

It has remained cold with a moderate to strong North-Easterly wind. After some overnight snow the day has been dry. Unstable windslab is present on South through West to North West aspects above 800m. In sheltered areas on North to East aspects recent snow is poorly bonded to any underlying frozen old snow. Exposed slopes at higher levels on North to East aspects have largely been scoured, but localised areas of poorly bonded snow do remain. The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3).

AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 06/02/2009

Remaining cold, it is expected to be dry overnight and during the day with a moderate to strong North-Westerly wind. There will be some redistribution of snow, and unstable windslab will be present on East through South to West aspects mainly above 700m. Additionally in sheltered locations on North to East aspects areas of recent snow will remain poorly bonded to underlying hard old snow. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3).

CLIMBING CONDITIONS

SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow at all levels and on all aspects.
ICING: Continuing to build in the cold conditions.
COMMENT: It looks like the cold weather will continue over the weekend.
