SNOW AND AVALANCHE
REPORT
NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS

AVALANCHE HAZARD THU 05/02/2009

Today it has been generally dry and cold with light North- Easterly winds on the tops. Some drifting has occurred mainly above 700 metres and this has formed areas of weakly bonded windslab on South-East through South to Westerly aspects. Deep snow lies on all aspects and at all levels and is slowly consolidating, however on all steep slopes where deep snow lies the snowpack has some instability. Slope settlement was noted on a West aspect at 900 metres. The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3)

AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 06/02/2009

Overnight some snow is expected which will last into the morning. The winds will be moderate North-Westerly and the freezing level will be at 200 metres. Instabilities will remain in the soft windslab that exists mainly above 700 metres on South- East through South to Westerly aspects and here avalanches are likely. Some drifting will occur and this will form additional weakly bonded windslab on East to Southerly aspects mainly above 1000 metres. Gully flanks and exits in North facing corries will be affected due to cross loading. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3)

CLIMBING CONDITIONS

SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Deep snow at all levels
