AVALANCHE HAZARD THU 05/02/2009

After some significant snowfall overnight observers noted deep drifts on nearly every aspect today. The deepest accumulations are to be found on sheltered areas mostly on South through West to North-Westerly aspects above 800 metres. All deeper recent accumulations were demonstrating poor stability where tested. Many areas exposed to the winds were scoured and icy. The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3).

AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 06/02/2009

There will be no new snowfall and the winds will ease back a little. Stability in the snowpack will slowly continue to improve but deeper deposits will remain moderately to poorly bonded. These areas will be found on many aspects with the deepest on South through West to North Westerly aspects above 800 metres. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3).

CLIMBING CONDITIONS

SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Good cover from valley level with deep drifts in places.
ICING: Where ice is exposed it is VERY icy.
COMMENT: Worth allowing plenty time to get around the hill at the moment, very variable conditions underfoot. Some thought should go into route choice, there is still plenty to go at.
