Avalanche Information for the Scottish Mountains
SAIS Avalanche Reports - Start of Season 2024/25 - Be Alert to Early Winter Snowpack Instabilities
Daily Avalanche Reports for the 6 operational areas of Lochaber, Glencoe, Creag Meagaidh, Southern Cairngorms, Northern Cairngorms and Torridon regions will be issued from Thursday 12th Dec 2024. Prior to this date mountain conditions will be monitored and when the first mountain snows arrive landscape photos for all areas will be provided in the SAIS Blogs for snow cover reference. Additionally, in collaboration with Met Office meteorologists, future weather patterns will be monitored. When significant blanket snow cover is likely to be present in the mountains SAIS avalanche forecasters will carry out field observations and produce public avalanche hazard reports. Lochaber reports will be a good reference for the western highland ranges and Northern Cairngorms/ Torridon reports for the north and eastern highland ranges.

Moderate - Human triggered avalanches are possible, good visibility and route selection important especially in steep locations as indicated. Careful group management and good spacing will reduce loading on slopes. Use mountain features (ridges and scoured slopes etc) to travel safely.
